Six reds escorted their captive, a blue sphere, to the virus vault.

Think red. Tiffany tried to project the thought into the virus vault. The energy field turned off for a split second, and the prisoner detail jostled the large red inside the vault and bounced it to the far side.

“What the— ? Get the blue one, you idiots,” the larger red sphere said and morphed into a human form. Seven reds exited the vault, and the force field resumed. Six of the reds merged with a blue to form Tiffany’s one blue sphere.

“Got ya, ya son of a bitch,” said Tiffany. Dave changed himself back into a blue sphere outside the vault.

“How did you think of that?” Dave asked.

“Desperation and Gran’s riddle. Come on, let’s get to the email file before the reds. Better we both turn red, just in case we’re too late and they’re waiting for us.”

A loud growling sound reverberated in her mind. They both reared away from the vault as the figure inside it hammered his fists against the energy field, creating a fizzing sound. The figure transformed into a fluid, mercury-like form which moved over the surface of the energy field as if looking for a way out. The contorted angry face of the hit man appeared on the surface of the form as it stopped moving and then rolled down toward the force field at the bottom of the virus vault. On impact, it changed to a black shadow and glided toward the back of the vault. Tiffany wanted to hold Dave out of a sense of relief, but grinned inwardly at the realization she had no arms.

“He’s finished. Come on, let’s get outta here,” said Tiffany.

“Why didn’t you leave me here?” he asked as they searched for the email file.

She didn’t have an answer, but dwelt on the question as they found and entered the email file. Tiffany bounced against the code. A short string of code exited and returned with the camera code and added the recorded camera file as an additional attachment.

“Let's do this together and hit the send code,” she said.

They merged and hit the code, then separated.

“Oh my God,” he said.

“That’s something of an understatement. That was some experience.” She felt as though she seemed to be pulsating more than she had done in the afterglow of them joining together and noticed they were both now a glowing pink color. “Shame to burst your bubble, but when we joined, it was more of a self-gratifying, intense, one-night stand. It changes nothing. I still can’t remember us together in my past life.” Tiffany regretted the put-down and wished she could take back the words.

“To hell with the past,” he said. “You still haven’t answered why you came back for me. Besides that, I could get used to this joining business for eternity.”

He has a point. She didn’t respond, but she smiled inside.

“Did you feel that?” Dave asked.

“Do you mean a sudden urge to head back to the hospital computer?” Tiffany followed him as he led the way.
